What are clear aligners?
Clear aligners are removable dental appliances that gradually move your teeth into their planned positions. During treatment, you receive a series of custom-made aligners. Each one applies targeted forces and is worn for a set period before you move on to the next.
Because aligners are usually barely noticeable in everyday life, they are particularly suitable for people who want discreet treatment. You remove them for meals, brushing your teeth and most drinks.
Which orthodontic problems can aligners correct?
Aligners can correct many tooth and bite problems. Their suitability does not depend on the visible tooth position alone: we also consider your bite, jaw position, tooth roots and the health of your teeth and gums.
More complex cases may require additional treatment elements or fixed braces.
Who are aligners suitable for?
Aligners are particularly suitable for teenagers and adults who want discreet, removable orthodontic treatment. Because they must be worn consistently, success depends greatly on the daily wearing time.
Aligners can also be a good option if you travel frequently for work or spend longer periods abroad. We determine whether they are suitable for you during your orthodontic examination.
With or without attachments
Attachments are small, tooth-coloured composite shapes bonded to individual teeth. They can support certain tooth movements and improve treatment control.
Depending on the orthodontic problem, modern aligner systems may allow treatment with only a few attachments or none at all. We assess whether this is possible and appropriate as part of your individual treatment plan.

Frequently asked questions about clear aligners
Are aligners really invisible?
Aligners are clear and usually barely noticeable in everyday life. At close range, however, the aligners and any attachments may be visible.
How long should I wear my aligners each day?
For successful treatment, aligners should generally be worn for around 20 to 22 hours per day.
You normally remove them for meals, brushing your teeth and hot, sugary or staining drinks. You can usually drink water while wearing them. Whenever possible, clean your teeth before putting the aligners back in.
How long does aligner treatment take?
Treatment time depends on the type and severity of the orthodontic problem. Minor corrections may take only a few months, while more extensive treatment takes longer.
The required tooth movements, complexity of the case, daily wearing time and the way your teeth respond all affect the duration. After your examination, we will give you an individual estimate.
How much does aligner treatment cost?
The cost depends on the orthodontic problem, scope and expected duration of treatment, and the diagnostic and technical work involved.
After your examination, you will receive a clear, personalised cost plan. Monthly instalments are available at Scandi Smiles. Depending on your policy, private health or supplementary insurance may cover some or all of the cost. We recommend submitting the cost plan before treatment begins.
Does aligner treatment hurt?
A new aligner may cause a feeling of pressure for a few days. This usually subsides. Please contact us if discomfort is severe or persists.
Can every orthodontic problem be treated with aligners?
Aligners can treat many orthodontic problems. For very complex tooth or jaw problems, fixed braces, combined treatment or another approach may be more suitable.
Will I need attachments?
Not always. Whether attachments are needed depends on the planned tooth movements and aligner system. We use them only when they support controlled and predictable treatment.
How do I clean my aligners?
The correct cleaning method depends on the aligner material. Depending on the system, cleaning tablets, an ultrasonic cleaner or another method may be suitable.
Some aligners must not be cleaned with hot water because they may deform. Other materials are intentionally activated with warmth before use. Before treatment begins, we explain exactly how to wear, activate and clean your aligners.
Can I speak normally with aligners?
Speaking may feel slightly unfamiliar for the first few days, but most patients adjust quickly.
What can I eat during aligner treatment?
You remove your aligners for meals, so there are generally no special food restrictions.
Sugary foods and drinks should still be consumed in moderation. Brush your teeth before putting the aligners back in.
Can I drink coffee or tea while wearing aligners?
Do not drink coffee or tea while wearing your aligners. Heat and pigments may deform or stain them. Remove the aligners and, if possible, clean your teeth before putting them back in.
Can I play sport while wearing aligners?
Yes. Aligners can be worn for most sports. Contact sports may require a suitable mouthguard adapted to your treatment.
Can I travel during aligner treatment?
Aligner treatment can usually be combined well with travel and longer stays abroad.

How often will I need a check-up?
The interval between check-ups depends on your progress and the aligner system used. Our Alignio patient app also allows us to support you between appointments, although in-practice check-ups remain an important part of treatment.
What should I do if I lose an aligner?
Contact us as soon as possible. Depending on your stage of treatment, you may need to temporarily continue with the previous aligner or move on to the next one. Always confirm the correct step with us first.
What happens after aligner treatment?
The retention phase begins after active treatment. A fixed retainer, removable retainers or a combination of both helps keep your teeth in their new positions.
